The 5 cm Kampfwagenkanone was designed for the Pz Kpfw III to replace the 3,7 cm Kampfwagenkanone. The ammunition had a smaller charge than that for the longer-barreled 5 cm Kampfwagenkanone 39 (L/60) and 5 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 38.
