Code Names for Armored Units in the West

An essential part when selecting code names is to not make it obvious from the code name what it is trying to conceal. Curiously, in the list of code names below, from 1944 or 1945, the author seems to have gone to quite some length in order to achieve exactly the opposite.

1. SS-Panzer-Division Leibach Probably from "Laibach", the German name for the city Ljubljana. Beginning of the code word refers to the division's name, Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler.
2. SS-Panzer-Division Zweibrücken German city. Beginning of the code word contains the German word for two, Zwei.
9. SS-Panzer-Division Neunendorf German city. Beginning of the code word contains the German word for nine, Neun.
10. SS-Panzer-Division Zentrifuge German city. Beginning of the code word is phonetically similar to the German word for ten, Zehn.

Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653 Hubertus 1 Hubertusjagd is a traditional mounted hunt using hounds, named after the Saint Hubertus. It is a type of Hetzjagd (cursorial hunting).
